How is Opal Valued

Opal is one of the hardest gemstones to evaluate, because there are so many variables to take into account.  Some of these variables include:

1. Type: Opal comes in various types, with black opals being the most valuable, followed by crystal opals, white opals, and fire opals.

2. Origin: Opal gemstone can be found all over the world, in places like Australia, Brazil, Ethiopia, and more. Opal from different places are worth different amounts with Australian opal being worth the most as it is usually the most stable.

3. Body tone: The body tone of opal refers to the underlying color of the stone. The darker the body tone, the more valuable the opal. Body tone is measured between N1 and N9 as well as Light and Dark Crystal.

4. Brightness: Opals that display bright colors and flashes of light are more valuable than those that do not. Brightness is measured between B1 and B5. 

5. Pattern: The pattern of opal is another important factor in determining its value. The most sought-after pattern is the harlequin, which consists of tightly packed, uniform squares of color.

6. Color: Opals with a base color of red are more rare and sought after, as well stones with more total colors present tend to be much more valuable.

7. Size: Larger opals are rarer and more valuable than smaller ones.

8. Shape: Circular and Oval cut stones tend to be worth more but other shapes have been getting more and more popular.

9. Quality: How well the stone was cut, including dome height, polish quality, and consistency.

10. Condition: The condition of the opal, including any cracks or chips, can also affect its value.
